With the centennial anniversary quickly approaching, the zoo and staff are preparing well in advance for this milestone. Thinking back almost 100 years ago, when in 1914, the doors were first opened, many at that time could not imagine how this attraction would continue to grow. Especially since the main focus back then was on rhinos, black and white.

They had major problems breeding these animals in captivity, however finally, in 1979, they met with success. Since then, the Jacksonville Zoo, has become world renown for their breeding practices and even as recent as 1990, was the only facility to be able to produce white rhinos in the world.

Today, there are hundreds of animals and quite a few exciting attractions as well. Some include the Outback Steakhouse Australian adventure and the Wildlife Carousel. They also opened their botanical gardens section in 2005. As of 2009, they opened there newest exhibit, featuring komodo dragons. Because of their constant efforts, they remain one of the most exciting Jacksonville attractions, to date.

They are very easy to remember, especially since they are only closed one day a year, Christmas Day. All other 364 days of the calendar year, this attraction remains open to the public.

Most consider the zoo to be one of the best places to visit in Florida because of the accessibility. You rarely have to think about when to go. The hours of operation are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

It is important to keep in mind, however, that the entry gates will close about one hour in advance of the official close time. For this reason, lots of first-time visitors choose to stay in one of the hotels near Jacksonville Zoo. This practically guarantees that they won’t miss out on any of the fun.

They occur all year round. In fact, there are so many, that is difficult to list them all. Suffice to say, they begin on New Year’s Day with the 4-D Experience. In February, they celebrate Black History Month and Valentine’s Day. They end this month with the Dino Trek for members only, and the Grand Opening begins in March.

From April through May, they celebrate spring with the Rabbit Egg Hung, World Penguin Day and National Garden Day. Memorial Day starts the summer season with another host of events.
